Taking the School out of homeschooling..

I am trying VERY hard to take the word SCHOOL out of our Homeschool.. not an easy task I must say.  I think by constantly referring to it as school work and such it’s started to get a negative feel . So we’re trying to stop that and say lesson’s and learning time and such.

I had always wanted to do that from the beginning.. but Declan was always so straight and narrow he needs to know what counted as “school” so the word became prominent in our day to day.

Yesterday in his Acrobatics class his cousin ( 7 months older and in public school 2nd grade) questioned Declan when he was asked what grade he was in..he said 2nd.. She was challenging that I guess because he is younger and if in PS would be in 1st grade. Declan got upset because he is , after all, doing 2nd and 3rd grade work. That got me thinking.. We need to stop thinking about SCHOOL and start just thinking about knowledge  and learning.

So this morning I informed Declan it was NOT school time.. if he wanted to do school he could hop on the PS bus and join them in a school.. we don’t do school anymore..we learn and acquire knowledge! I also told him gone are the grade levels.. he doesn’t have a grade level, he has an ability level.. and he is “on track for his age”.. that’s all he needs to tell anyone! ( although I can pretty much still be sure he’ll answer “2nd grade” if asked..lol).

So let’s hope this helps us on our path to making learning a little less “school” like!

I try my best to tell the girls that we have “lessons” instead of school work, but there are some days that I forget and say “school” and they have to remind me. When asked about what grade they are in, my girls do inform people that they are in “this grade” or “that grade”, but all the while knowing that they are learning at different levels. I think that you handled everything perfectly.

We don’t usually call it school here, either. I usually just say “let’s work on our projects,” or “lets do some math,” or whatever. But sometimes I call it school, even though the term really doesn’t fit what we do here. I think that more important than what we call it is our attitude towards it. If we treat learning as a chore and something to get over with as quickly as possible, then it will always be “school” whether we call it that or not. However, if we treat it as if it is a joy and a privilege and we hope it never ends, then it is a real learning lifestyle, even if we slip and call it “school”.Know what I mean?
