Hello again!

I’m BACK.. at least for today. So how is everyone? We are most excellent here. We just finished up our school year and are on a short break. We will start up “Summer school” in a week or so. During this down time I have been getting ready for next year .. one thing we had done for half of this past year was a varied version of Workboxes, and we had a chart for each kiddo that they would move various topics along each day as we completed them. At the end of the week each space each subject moved was worth a point. The points were for spending at school store ( items I have purchased on clearance or at the dollar spot/store). The poster we used to keep track was LARGE.. I wanted something smaller so here’s what I did!

I bought 3 of these:( note they are the SMALL tri-fold’s)

Then I spent and afternoon cutting up construction paper and decorating them:( this one is Taejans)

this is what the “finished” product looks like:

I kept it low color and low key.. I figure the kids can add more stuff if they desire and it also leaves it expandable as we add other topics.

I used the workbox tags, shrunk the printing scale and laminated. I also purchased small velcro dots as the “normal” size ones are too big!
On this side are our 5 day a week subjects:

then the center has the tasks we do 5 days a school week

and then the subjects we only do 2 days a week.

The kids advance each item ahead for every day they complete a subject or a task. The smaller size and ease to store these has me excited for using them in the fall!

Word Family strips..

I was cleaning out the school room awhile back , trying to consolidate and such. I found these word strip’s I got at The Dollar Tree and was about to throw them out when a light bulb went off ( ha ha ha to any random comments on that one.) A few years ago we got with all the rage and made Paint Chip Phonics cards. We didn’t use them much. I found them bulky and cumbersome to store and the kids did to use. So we set them aside.

Well this new “light bulb” was all centered around Taejan and the word families he is learning. I sat down with a ruler, a razor blade ( cus I’m a thrill seeker..no exacto knife for me) and a permanent marker..this is what we have now:

The green strips have the A-Z alphabet plus some common blends ( St,Sp etc), the yellow have 2 word family endings per strip.

using them is easy as can be..

Taejan loves using them..and even coming up with the silly non-words that happen at times!

As he studies more word families we can simply add more to the stack!

Yet another catch up blog… bad me!

Yep.. this is another one of those “in the past 6 weeks we’ve done….” postings. Although, I have few pictures because basically I suck .. I’m trying to get my blog mojo back..I swear I am!!

these are NOT in order but since you aren’t here..well it doesn’t matter does it?lol

Taejan did some color mixing:

seat work:

Declan introduced Taejan to snap circuits:

we got a little snow ( this has been a very snow-less winter..sigh)

The kids spent time together:

used the white board:

They took apart some old audio equipment:

We hosted an American Girl Luncheon:

Declan turned 10..and had an epic party at the nightclub I bartend at..

complete with a cotton candy machine rental:

We tried out and use ixl.com for a month.. great site.. but the kids got bored fast:

and we went to the local Museum ( it was FREE day..and I like free!)

I promise we did a lot more..but I am terrible about pictures lately. I have a ton of all 3 in basketball but I am waiting til the season is over and I will do a whole post just about that.

This coming week the public schools are on break..and Declan is spending 3 days at a baseball clinic at one of the semi local colleges.. so not much in the way of schooling will be happening!

We don’t look like homeschoolers..

That’s what I was told yesterday.

I must say I chuckled. This is far from the first time we’ve heard this, or something similar. I’m always left wondering exactly what they think a homeschooling family looks like. Long denim skirts? Kids in matching clothes? Us merrily making our own food and clothes and singing together every night? Oh I know there are homeschooling families that DO look like that, and I applaud them… I’m all about whatever works for your family!

We, we are just your normal ( ish..I prefer not to be thought of as normal) american family. My husband is a blue collar worker ( think very dirty when he comes home from work).. I am a typical jeans and Aero shirt kinda mom..although I usually skip the trendy boots.. just not in my budget. My kids all look like kids.. ya know..any kid you’d meet anywhere. Well my oldest stands out a bit..the gauge in his ear, double pierced eyebrow and occasional Mohawk will do that afterall, but he actually spend more of his educational years in PS afterall.lol

We looked like this long before we decided to homeschool.( decision was made almost exactly 6 years ago now) We will still look like this in 10 years when we are done homeschooling. It’s just who we are. I won’t lie though.. I love it when people don’t know my kids are homeschooled. I feel we are breaking stereotypes. Way more of the kids we know that are homeschooled are “normal looking every day kids” than not. You would never look at them and say “homeschooled”. This is a good thing. The largest growing group of people who choose to homeschool ( at least around here) are your average ,everyday families. We all have different reasons.. and so far it’s still working for us!

I was once described as soggy granola..ya know..too crunchy ( ie breastfed, cloth diapered, delayed vax’s, homeschool etc) for mainstream and too mainstream for the uber crunchy. So yep.. I’m a soggy granola “normal” homeschooler! Works for me!

First day of School 2012…

Well today was our first day back for 2012. We had a rough start.. no one was up at their normal time, I hadn’t slept much the night before and the kids were just fighting sitting for lessons at every turn!

So after laying down the law, ie Ziah got sent to her room and fell asleep and Declan went and cleaned his, Taejan and I got his seat work all done!

Finally the other 2 were ready to go..

They got thru all their seat work then it was snack time!! We recently got a BJ’s wholesale club and they have these bags of mini peppers we just love!

After snack we started our own little Olympics. There are 4 categories and more than competing against each other, we will be competing against ourselves. I need to get moving more, and let’s face it… it’s hard with 4 kids, working 2 jobs, homeschooling and taking the kids to all their activities..I just can’t find the time to exercise ( or the desire).

Up first we Jumping Jacks..poor Taejan just can’t get the coordination down for these:

then Foot Fiery.. we “stole” this from the kids basketball training:

Push ups:

and a modified version of jump rope:

Last year a teacher friend of mine gave me the entire PS 5th grade math and ELA curriculum..so I am using the reader for our reading time.. the stories are great, and shorter so I don’t lose the kids interest!

We started our Unit on Winter. We are studying how the Sun heats up the earth. The hemispheres and such…and google earth came in handy for showing the kids a good visual on how the sun hits the earth. Of course ,being us, we had no flash lights so my cell phone’s camera light came in handy too:

There’s Ziah being the Sun and Declan showing how the Earth orbits the sun:

After that we played 2 new games..one for pure educational reasons..Camp

And one for pure fun.. Scavenger Hunt

my living room was a mess when we were done:

Luckily the last round of the game is all about cleaning up..LOL

We got so much core work done and a lot of fun stuff too. A very successful first day back!
