One way we’ve livened things up here is with School Store:
We had school store.. I’ve had people ask me about this so here’s some details and pictures. My kids earn points for good behavior, being extra helpful ( without being asked) , being nice to each other, Ziah can earn them for going to her dance classes withoout a fight, and both Z and T earn them if they go to bed with no issues, also for being good while out etc..they can also lose said points for being mouthy, disobedient , mean to each other, being disrespectful etc. The points are stored in these cute mailboxes I got awhile ago at target’s dollar spot.
Monday morning they get to count their points, add in any they “carried over” from the week before and SHOP!
here’s the store all set up: Things are currently 1,2,4,8,10 and 16 points. I try to have things they have to save and work for (right now the 16 point basket) and small inexpensive things so they can often get one bigger thing and one or two smaller things. I also always have schoolish things like pencils, erasers, pencil toppers, notebooks etc. Oh and candy..dum dum lolipops are 1 point, but they can only buy one!

Here they are shopping..it’s the first thing they do once ALL 3 are up.. that is tough as they all wake at different times..but they are learning patience too!

Most of the items are target clearance items or dollar spot/dollar store type things. The higher end ones are the target clearance stuff for sure. I also have tattoo’s from oriental trading and special character crayons etc..

Our 2nd version of School store:
So, anyone who’s read this blog knows we started school a few weeks ago..and now we’ve gone down to just the basics until my extra kiddo goes back to his school. So I’ve taken this time to prep lessons for the whole year and to get our school store re-vamped. This is the way we used to do it here. Now since I do love to change things up I’ve “stolen” a new idea from my bestest girl Chelita.
I am using the same register and checks as Shady Bayou Academy, I think Declan especially will get a lot of learning to use a check! I will “pay” the kids for certain tasks ( school work, chores etc) and being kind to each other and going to bed well etc. I am thinking 25 cents per act. At the end of the week i will write each kiddo out a check and they can deposit it in their acct. Than they can choose to save it all, spend some or all. They will have their own check book to then write out a check to Wayzley Academy School Store to pay for their purchases.
I have a super stocked school store, mostly thanks to Target and their amazing clearances! Items range from $1 to $50 ( havoc rc car the climbs the walls literally). I tend to mark creative or learning items lower than fun items. So small moon sand containers are $3 where the Doll set Ziah wants is $15. Silly Putty is $2, and a CDrom game for Declan is $20. Most of these items I paid $5 or less for..so yeah..huge mark up..but I do only buy on clearance so…lol
here’s the 2 school store bins:

this has the smaller items like flubber, bracelets, moon sand, paddle ball, match box cars, notebooks etc.

this has the pricier items like the havoc car,s National geographic stuffed animal Declan has been wanting, doll items etc.
I will continue to add to it as I am sure between the 3 kids they will have it emptied fast..lol
Now on to the mailboxes. These used to house the points the kiddo’s shopped with. Now they house little cards. The kids will get 2 a day. one a task card and one a rewards. Such as “read a story to your brother” or “help your sister clean her room”. If they do those without complaint they get 50 cents added to their school store accounts. The reward cards say things like “you pick the story at quiet time” or ” you pick the park” or “20 minutes TV time”.

Busy Boxes and a Quiet Time Box
Taejan can be very disruptive to schooling. I detest spending so much of my day getting upset with a 4 year old.. it’s not fair to any of us. Workboxes have helped…but once his are done watch out..
Since Declan’s 3rd grade work often takes 3-4 hours and Ziah’s 1st grade 1-2 hours there is lot of time for Taejan to get himself in trouble.
So today I started putting this together..Taejan’s Busy Box.. everything in here is for him, and it will ONLY come out when he is done with his workboxes and we are still working. He can not use any of it any other time. I am hoping to add more items, switch items out etc..

I bought these little boxes for $1.99 each at Target… what can’t fit in a box I placed in a baggie:

His favorite coloring books..now he can only use them when he gets his busy box:

in these 2 are stringing beads and then cardstock cut up and 6 Halloween stampers:

hoping this gives us some relief from destructo boy! ( it did btw)

I actually got these for Taejan’s..but she can have “first dibs” on them:

the one on the right is a magnetic playset:

Declan is mildly upset he doesn’t get one..sigh
Edited:
So… I made Sir Declan happy… I made him ( quickly I might add) a quiet time Box..
so this is for after schooling only..once he’s done with lessons he can have access to this:

Hoping now he won’t feel bad . I hate when he feels bad simply because he’s the oldest at home and doesn’t get the same type of fun things the other 2 get!
Waiting Stations and a new kinda box..
So, we recently added Waiting Stations ( inspired by this blog) to our school day! These are the places the kiddo’s can go while waiting for me. They are hugely successful thus far!
A Tanagram type game:

The Geoboard:

A craft/art activity:

Ziah doing a waiting station that involves her learning even and odd numbers:

Taejan using his Lauri Stacking Pegs at one of his waiting stations:

Another new addition to the day are these little boxes. I fill them up with items based on a certain topic..
Taejan’s for the week is to work on his fine motor skills..so we have screws, washers and nuts to work with:

working very diligently on them:

Jadziah’s is foam shapes with some small cups..she can sort them by shape, color, size..whatever:(she’s very tactile so this is perfect for her)

Declan’s has a spring scale, a tape measure and a cylinder for measuring with along with a notebook to record all his work:

now shhhh..they have been doing these before and after normal schoolwork of their own accord..no one tell them they are learning while doing it ok? It would so make them want to do them less…LOL
